West Coast Fish Print for A Fish Named Fred – Pencil-Drawn Shirt Design

Project Details

For this custom print, I partnered with A Fish Named Fred to design a naturalistic fish-themed textile featuring hand-drawn illustrations of fish found along the West Coast of the United States.

This print was developed for a shirt within their seasonal menswear collection—celebrating the brand’s aquatic roots while elevating it through detailed pencil sketching and a refined, modern color palette.

The Concept

The idea was to create a clean, wearable print that felt artistic, informed by nature, and connected to the oceanic identity of the Fred brand—but with a subtle, almost academic illustration style.

Featured Elements:

  • Realistic pencil-drawn fish species native to the Pacific coastline
  • Carefully arranged layout with rhythm and movement
  • Fine-line hatching and shading to give the print a natural sketchbook feel

Color Variants

Green Base Variant

  • Off white background
  • Linework in soft green tones
  • Accents in dark green and green and soft yellow
  • Feel: Balanced, outdoorsy, sophisticated

Coral Variant

  • White background
  • Fish in coral and red en orange outlines
  • Feel: Warm, expressive, casual coastal energy

Ocean Blue Variant

  • Base: Deep sea blue
  • Pencil lines in light blue, blue and dark blue tones
  • Feel: Clean, and fresh for spring/summer drops

COLOR VARIANTS

What I Delivered

  • Full repeat tile (seamless, scalable)
  • Multi-variant color packs for digital textile printing
  • Garment-ready files for Fred’s apparel team
  • Print test swatches + application mockups
  • Final approval layout for factory use (pattern alignment & sizing guide)

Why This Print Works

✔️ Evokes travel and nostalgia in a totally fresh way
✔️ Combines detailed illustration with lifestyle wearability
✔️ Multiple color options made it versatile for styling and SKU development
✔️ Perfectly on-brand for Fred — quirky, bold, and full of story

What I Learned

This was a reminder of how a great print is also a narrative.

This project taught me to:

  • Combine regional storytelling with textile functionality
  • Design multiple variants while preserving design integrity
  • Create art that feels like vacation but sells like fashion
  • Trust subtle brush detail to give prints timeless texture
